ReJeana L. Goldsborough

Hello everybody, my name is ReJeana Goldsborough, pronounced "Regina" but obviously not spelled that way. I'm from Reading, Pennsylvania, which is home to the Reading Railroad featured on classic Monopoly boards. For those of you who still can't pinpoint Reading, we're about an hour north of Philadelphia, and an hour east of Hershey (as in Hershey's Chocolates!)

Fun Fact: I've met the Cheetah Girls.
I graduated from a relatively small school as one of the few people pursuing film, so being in an environment with others who house the same interests as me is an entirely new experience. I became interested in film on a professional level when I was in 8th grade. I created a short "animated" children's film for a computer contest under the insistence of a teacher. I put animated in quotes because I used Microsoft Paint to do each frame. It took me months, and although I hated the process of "animating," I loved editing the completed images together in the very tame Microsoft Movie Maker. My very amateur and lame video ended up winning first in counties, and second in states. From there, my interests only grew, and as I entered high school I actively took part in all things DMA.

I began working alongside my high school's TV Studio teacher, who I came to see as a mentor of sorts. Before finding a job as a teacher, he had dappled in the industry as a short documentary filmmaker and a video editor. He had done the Hollywood scene, and to me he was a well of information and a role model. Through him I learned the basics of a lot of components of filmmaking, but it was video editing that I truly fell in love with. I didn't mind shooting, or working lights, but at the end of the day I preferred sitting alone in an editing room with several computer screens and a cup of coffee working non-stop on a project for hours on end.

I don't really know if editing is what I want to focus on, but I have a pretty good idea. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy writing scripts, and I enjoy shooting, and directing, but nothing makes me feel more accomplished than getting just the right cut that ties together an entire scene. I love spending hours upon hours of time perfecting a final cut of a film, and having it turn out just right. I love the trial and error, and the self learning that comes with the art.

Professor Dawn mentioned something the other day that really stuck with me. She called editing "the invisible art." I couldn't agree more. I truly think that editing is one of the most overlooked yet one of the most important aspects of filmmaking. I always liken it to solving a puzzle. I have an idea as to what the final product should look like, but it's up to me to fit the pieces together in the most appealing way.

Anyhow, I'm excited to be studying Film Production at Huntington. The short films we've watched in class so far have really gotten me eager for my future here. My favorite was the "Sour Balls" short film,  just because of the simplicity of the concept and how the music added to the overall atmosphere of the film. I'm looking forward to spending the semester in Leeper's class, and discussing the films we're exposed to with all you fine folk.

  1. Hey ReJeana!! I think it's so cool that you live in Reading because I live 20 minutes away from Reading (sometimes not even that long depending on how fast you drive.....). Do you know where Morgantown/Elverson is? I know I know, it's the second week and the whole "where you're from" thing should be done and over with, but when you said you were from Reading in UCF, I got really excited, but haven't gotten a chance to talk to you in real life yet....

What part of Reading are you from? I went to Reading Area Community College in downtown Reading for a class last summer, and even though it's in downtown Reading, I thought it was pretty cool there (definitely not nearly as cool as Huntington, but I enjoyed it). Anyway, looking forward to meeting you!

By the way, it's really cool to hear someone be so enthusiastic about editing. I enjoy editing too; it's such an awesome feeling when everything lines up and just works. But I haven't done much of it, unfortunately.

    1. I know exactly where Morgantown is! I'm more specifically from Mohnton, which is a suburb of Reading maybe 5 minutes outside of the city. I say Reading because it's easier to pinpoint Reading then the sleepy town of Mohnton. However, I spend a lot of my time in town either volunteering or shopping or hitting up the Imax theater. All the cool places are in the city :)

I've been to RACC a few times, not ever for a class but just because our school held a lot of larger functions in their auditoriums. I went to Governor Mifflin High School, but I don't know if you're familiar with us. We're known for out large quantities of bomb threats. Did you go to a public school in the area?
