The Tony Campolo quote
Professor Leeper told us in class today really caused me to feel personally
convicted.
God calls us to a holy
life so we can get dirty and reach others, He doesn't want us to sit and judge
others, or just simply tell them how to "fix" themselves. Did
we see Jesus sitting on a high throne in some temple telling people what they're
doing wrong while He was on earth? No. Jesus was born a lowly boy....pretty
much from some slummy town of hicks that nobody would've heard of if His birth
hadn't happened. Jesus lives His adult life as a servant. He hung out and
did life with gross sickly people, prostitutes, and unpopular tax collectors;
he washed people’s feet that were covered in mud and animal dung. That's gross.
That's dirty. That's showing true acts of love to reach people. And that’s
how we should be doing life. Loving others as Christ does is dirty work, it's not shoving Bible verses and condemnments on others, it's reaching them on their level.
Another thing Jesus
shows us is that He will use complete messes to reach others for Him. Like in The Fridge film we
watched today- drunks, hobos, and street people are the ones who saved the
small child from his confinement that he was forced into in the box
freezer. We are often far too concerned about our own personal appearance, to seem like "perfect" Christians, and we don't want to be affiliated with anything other.
Jesus also wasn't afraid
to offend people, he stood up to the Pharisees and broke their
"rules", and He did so respectfully and powerfully.
I feel like this is a
good example of ways we can reach people through films, as well as just in our everyday lives. We should be using parables like The Fridge, ones that aren’t
perfect stories, don’t include perfect people, yet have an impactful message
that others can relate to. We can use our film talent for God's glory, He can work through us, our stories told through a lens can impact people if we let Him.
God's calling us to reach people. To love on them. To get dirty. Let's do that, let's get dirty for Jesus.
