Being Understood As An Artist

"After all, wanting to be understood is a basic need- an affirmation of the humanity you share with everyone around you. The risk is fearsome in making your real work you hand the audience the power to deny the understanding you seek; you hand them the power to say, "you're not not like us; you're weird; you're crazy."" This is another great quote from the book Art and Fear. I think that this really speaks true to many artists, we want our work to be understood in the same way that we feel, but when you are putting your work out into the world, you are making it vulnerable to many different perceptions from others. The truth of the matter is, not everyone is going to understand your work in the same way you do as the artist. I think that is better to make artwork that you feel a connection with and enjoyed making rather than constantly worrying about what someone is going to say about your work, because they don't understand it the way that you do.

  1. Yeah, definitely. The only thing is, if you are making a film and trying to get a point across through it, then you have to kind of try to get people to see it your way...but you can't go overboard about that, because, like you said, some people just won't understand it.
Two thumbs up on the picture.
