In 1985 a struggling band named A-ha were trying to get their struggling single to take off. That single was the iconic one-hit wonder Take On Me. Steve Barron who had been directing music videos was given the job to make this record a hit. He came up with the idea of a hand coming out of a comic book and the whole thing grew into a live action/animation music video. It was and expensive to try this out on a band that was unknown at that time. However it worked and many things came from it. First came a massive single, second came a new way of making videos, third a relationship between the lead singer and the girl in the video, and 6 MTV awards and 2 nominations.
In terms of holding up by today's standards it is supreme. Today's computer technology can make pictures look a handmade drawing, however they can't do it as well as being done manually. With computer's drawings would look perfect and hand drawn pictures have mistakes and pencil smudges. Also it might look so fake that it would like a simple computer filter was applied to it. That takes you out of the moment. I've seen parodies of the video and most of them suck. Why because they used computers!!!
